The 2012 Olympic Games logo was already considered controversial when it was unveiled in 2007. But according to a new report from the ILNA news agency today, Iran is brandishing the logo as racist and says the emblem spells out the word “Zion.”
“The use of the word ‘Zion’ by the designers of the Olympics logo…. in the emblem of the Olympics Games 2012 is a very revolting act,” Mohammad Aliabadi, head of the National Olympic Committee in the Islamic Republic, said in a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge.
Aliabadi said that if Rogge did not act on changing the logo, it would “affect the participation of several countries, especially Iran, which insists on following principles and values.”
I’m siding with Iran on this one, but not for some perceived racially-motivated bias.
Instead, I find the logo offensive for being utterly hideous. Can you imagine the amount of money exchanged for that unsightly design which, if you’ll notice, appears to show cartoon character Lisa Simpson doing a… uhhh… something no cartoon likeness should ever be seen doing!
